Where Art Thou? Right here…

May 19th, 2008

Although I dont normally post my acquisitions. I did think this one was worthy of a blog posting. WhereArtThou.com has found its way to my portfolio today via NameJet auction today. I thought it had great branding potential considering the commonality of the phrase. Of course, dont forget the movie - Brother Where Art Thou (A classic, starring George Clooney)

Did Godaddy Catch something?

May 19th, 2008

Most experienced domainers already know that Godaddy’s backorders are nearly worthless. For how large Godaddy is, they have one of the most inefficient backordering services around. However, I happened to have an extra backorder laying around in my account. I had noticed a domain name that I liked, Friendraiser.com (A combo between Friend and Fundraiser = Friendraiser). The domain was going to go through NameJets system (since it was a Network Solutions domain) But since no one had backordered it, I figured there was a good chance it would truely drop.

Sure enough, the domain dropped. However it was not Godaddy that caught it. The domain went through a few tasting cycles with random registrars, including what appeared to be a snapnames registrar. I was just notified today that Godaddy captured the domain name. It did not specifically state that I was the new registrant (which will open up an entire round of new questions if Im not) but it does show that Godaddy does have the capability to grab a domain name, that no one else wants.

I dont know if I should clap or laugh.

A Contest for Domainers - DNXperts Marketing Campaign

May 19th, 2008

In an effort to Market the blog DNXpert.com, they have launched a month long contest with several thousand dollars in prizes. The first step is simply sign up for their mailers and wait for instructions. I think its a great idea for DNXpert, I just wish things were a bit clearer on what needs to be done in order to get points. I do look forward to watching the contest unfold.

The list of prixes is below:

Avast ye Scallywag! Scallywag.com sells for $2,250

May 18th, 2008

NameJet had a pirates flair today when the domain name Scallywag.com sold for $2,250. This particular domain happened to be on my radar for a few weeks and I had hoped it would stay reasonable enough for me to purchase. However, it shot up about 3 times what I was willing to buy it at and settled for just over $2,000. I loved this one because of the potential for branding. The domain had a built in charisma that could have been applied anywhere and has enormous potential. Congrats to the new owner.

Afternics “Closing Soon” Auctions

May 17th, 2008

Afternic offers an auction system similar to Sedo. If you receive a bid on your domain name, you can send the auction to the “Closing Soon” section. I recently received a bid for v2o.com and have opted to push the domain name to Auction. I am curious to see how the system does, but what makes me nervous is the fact that there are only a handful of domain names in the “Closing Soon” section. The link is below for anyone wanting to place a bid.

Phoenix Meet and Greet - Followup

May 17th, 2008

The event turned out even better than I had anticipated. We had approximately 15 people in total and had an opportunity to meet a lot of new faces.  Some great networking was done, and even Adam Dicker and several Godaddy folks came out to say Hi and discuss. I shared a few of my wishes with how Godaddy could improve themselves, but I also commended them for being one of my favorite Registrars.

A big thanks to Adam who picked up the check at the end of the night. After speaking with everyone, I’m going to try and make this a monthly event for all domainers in the Arizona area and hopefully we’ll continue to attrack people from Godaddy as well.

Azimut.com - Sells for $11,969 despite TM issues

May 16th, 2008

Azimut is a luxury boat/yacht builder based in Italy. They currently use the domain azimutyachts.com for their business. Although it may be a bit early to speculate, it appears the domain will be in the hands of a parker. To me it seems very risky to spend nearly $12,000 on a brand name and attempt to park it. We shall see within a few days what the new owners intentions are.

ChicagoParks.com reaches $10,100 at NameJet

May 16th, 2008

Today at NameJet, ChicagoParks.com caught fire in a heated bidding war. Although the domain name had many bidders, it was two bidders who drove the price way up. I believe this name sold too high largely because of the bidding war that took place. If you take the top 50 cities in the US and add “Parks” - all of the domains are taken. The same with States as well.

The only one I found available to take was - DistrictOfColumbiaParks.com (which I did register).

Phoenix Domainer Gathering - TODAY!

May 16th, 2008

It snuck up fast, but today is the day. Many domainers from parts all over Arizona will be meeting up tonight for cocktails at Earls in Scottsdale. All are welcome to attend. I will be there as will David Bleaman from DailyDomainDrop.com and hopefully Adam Dicker from DNF and Godaddy. The official time is 8pm, but I will be there from 7pm onwards. Come say Hi!
