Domainer Mardi Gras Auction

February 21st, 2009

It seems like each time Domaintools puts an auction together, its always last minute, poorly advertised, and down right dissapointing. There was no exception this time around. The list of domains for sale wasnt even finalized until days before the actual auction, giving no time to bring in potential end-user bidders. Below are my notes, which I thought interesting:

StorageFacility.com sold for $5,000. It sold for $18,700 last year.

I hate when Auctioneers pretend they know what they are selling. "This is a tremendous oppertunity"

Jobless.com sold for $14,000, about where I expected it. This was my favorite buy of the auction.

There were only 80 or so online viewers durring the auction, NamePros ususally has more.

Overwhelmed.com sold for $3,700. It was listed last month in an email from RickLatona.com at $2,200.

Voodoo.com sold for $300,000 but no one was sure if it actually sold. This sold for more then all the other sales combined and probably turned a profit for Domaintools.

  1. I was a little shocked at the voodoo.com sale when they had other “voodoo” based names following interesting to see the whois changes for this domain!

  2. Voodoo.com was bought by the guy from Parked.com who hosted the auction, so not certain this is for real.

  3. Why wouldn’t it be “for real” ?

  4. Justin What makes you assume that end users weren’t bidding/hadn’t proxy bid or didn’t get contacted? I know for a fact that we had several at this auction. 40% of the domains were bid on (thus sold) before the auction even started.

I can appreciate the criticism on the late publishing of the list. It is an issue that is/was complicated by a variety of factors. Regardless of the efficiency in publishing the list aftermarket got bidders to the auction and sold close to 70% of the names. I’m sorry that’s disappointing to you. Your a hard man to please :)

  5. Adam,

Forgive skepticism on the Voodoo.com sale, I simply am waiting for the whois to change. Yes, your right - I am a hard man to please.

The late publishing of the list, makes it nearly impossible to bring in the bigger end-user buyer. Can you point to a domain that was purchased by an end-user? I would like to see how that sale compared to the Domainer to Domainer sales.

  6. I’d be surprised to see voodoo.com actually sell for $300K. I really can’t see how it would be worth anything near that… maybe $10K

  7. Could the voodoo.com sale have anything to do with VooDoo who makes custom gaming rigs? With gaming being comparable in income to the movie industry, maybe they might want it for $300K.
