Digimedia Sells Box.com for nearly $1,000,000

An interesting news story came out today on c|net about Box.net acquiring Box.com from Digimedia.com. The exact terms were not discussed, but they started geeking out talking zeros and integers revealing that the sale was in the $9xx,xxx area.

Love the robbery reference in the header:

CEO Aaron Levie got lucky: The company that owned the dot-com of his company name wanted a lot, but not as much as they could have held him up for.

But at least he had his colleague and well known journalist who shows an interest in domain names, Paul Sloan, clarify that Digimedia are good people:

“But these are good guys,” Sloan told me. “They’re not doing trademarks, they’re not doing porn.”

That makes it better.

Social.org Sells For $228,000

Mike Berkens @ TheDomains.com is reporting that Social.org sold today on NameJet for $228,000, or roughly 10% of last years $2,600,000 sale for the .com.

Fantastic sale for both buyer and seller!

Side Note: No no Mike totally cool, we’re the “domain name sales” site and all, but you go ahead and blog about domain sales. Way to scoop us ;)

Side Side Note: Remind me one day to make a post about being in the Middle East, speaking to a gentleman and being really creeped out when he kept telling me and my wife about how we should check out his “desert bashing…o…r…g” site. (say it fast)

Sometimes … you make mistakes.

At NameBio there are a few different professional circles that we float between. We’re heavy into domains obviously, but we’re also involved with IT startups.

Our friends at FounderFuel, a Canadian startup accelerator & TechStars affiliate based out of Montreal are 3 weeks into their second cohort. They’ve been blogging about the experience it as they go. Now, being a startup accelerator FounderFuel’s blog is startup focused, but the parallels between IT startups and the domain business are very strong.

A number of days ago our friends made a post that has a lot of relevance to all small business owners “Sometimes when you innovate, you make mistakes.” It’s well worth the read and has a great graphic that one of the FounderFuel team members created.

Below is a short excerpt, I encourage everyone to read the full post!

Making mistakes is inevitable. When kids learn to ride their bikes, they’re going to fall off. I sure as hell did. But I learned from my mistake and now, riding a bike is, well, as easy as riding a bike. Once you learn how to ride a bike, you don’t make the mistake of falling off it again. Riding a bike isn’t the most valuable skill, but making mistakes much bigger than falling off a bike can mean acquiring invaluable skills and significantly improving not just your business, but your own worth as well.

Things are in the works.

The team behind NameBio are busy guys, many irons in the fire, lots of food on their plates, or even up to our eyeballs in work at any given time. But NameBio holds a special place in our hearts and it’s time to show a little love.

We regularly work on the backend of the site, but have been hinting at upcoming frontend development with things like the ability to register as a member of the site and the reanimation of the blog.

So here’s the scoop. We’re in ‘spec mode’ right now working on some new layouts, content and tools for the site. We hope to roll out some new features in the coming weeks, but we may have some extra time to spend on NameBio.

So we want to know what you would find useful to add to the site.

Is there a tool that you would love to have?

Some extra data points that are needed?

Videos of cats maybe?

Post anything you would like in the comments below or send us a message via the contact page on the site. We can’t promise that we’ll add what you would like, but we guarantee that we’ll take all comments and suggestions into consideration.

Help us help you.

CloudServers.com Sells For Over $31,000

As expected, CloudServers.com was the second large ‘cloud’ sale of the day, topping out at $31,715, with 79 bids worth roughly $11,894 coming in the last hour alone.

Also as expected it beat the sale from earlier today, CloudApp.com that sold for $24,000.

Any predictions on the buyer? Large hosting company? Rackspace perhaps?

- Update -

The domain actually sold for $32,010 USD, the $31,715 is CDN, I didn’t notice that GoDaddy’s site automatically adjusts currency based on your location.  Good eye @DailyDomaining

CloudApp.com Sells For $24,000

News of a solid sale coming out of GoDaddy auctions made it’s way to us today. CloudApp.com riding the wave of popularity surrounding the ‘cloud’ sold today after receiving nearly 130 bids!

Hot on it’s tail is CloudServers.com, an arguably better domain name. Closing in a number of hours the domain has already passed $10,000 in bidding and is on it’s way to giving us a second high cloud sale to report.

fcbarcelona.cn – $10,000 … Really?

We’re all familiar with random domain sales that don’t follow much logic, but the sale reported by Sedo today of fcbarcelona.cn for $10,000 is questionable even by normal standards.

A weak domain extension combined with a potential trademark issue and high sale price.

What are we missing on this one? Would welcome some insight in the comments on this post, or on the domain’s page: http://namebio.com/fcbarcelona.cn
